One Direction proved that they have well and truly ‘arrived’ in America, after scooping three gongs at last night’s MTV Music Video Awards.
The band comprised of Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson beat off stiff competition, most notably from fellow teenybopper Justin Bieber, to walk away with Best New Artist, Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video for What Makes You Beautiful.
It was nothing short of a British invasion at last night’s awards, as Coldplay won Best Rock Video for Paradise, but were unable to attend, as they were performing in the Netherlands. Calvin Harris managed to add to Brittania’s domination last night, as he came away with Best Electronic Dance Music Video for his hit track Feels So Close.
Meanwhile, the most prestigious award of the night – Video of the Year went to Rihanna for her collaborative song with Calvin Harris, We Found Love.
The singer, who was sporting a new pixie hairstyle, kicked off the night’s proceedings with a performance of the winning track, which morphed into a medley, featuring Cockiness (I Love It) feat. A$AP and was seen kissing her ex Chris Brown on the lips when her name was announced as the winner.
Katy Perry, who also won a VMA last night – Best Art Direction for her Wide Awake video took to the stage to praise Rihanna’s performance and returned to present One Direction with their ‘Moonman’ gong for Best Pop Video.
Perry kissed each 1D member on the lips and Niall began the thank-yous by saying, “We’ve grown up watching this show and to even be here is an honour.”
It must have been a surreal moment for the Mullingar native and the band’s only Irish member to kiss Katy Perry on stage at LA’s Staples Centre, as she was the judge who had the deciding vote when Niall auditioned for the X Factor in Dublin back in 2010.
Since the X Factor, One Direction have gone on to become one of the biggest boybands in the world – making chart history back in March, when they became the first British boyband to debut at No.1 on the American Billboard 200 Album Chart.
